Desert safari for elderly guests in Dubai: who can join, what suits

Can an older traveller join a Dubai desert safari?

Yes, when four checks come out in your favour: your doctor's view, your heat tolerance, your tolerance of a long vehicle ride, and any condition or medicine that raises heat risk. A desert safari for elderly guests in Dubai is not a separate product. It is a choice of package and route, made by older travellers and seniors the same way anyone else makes it.

  1. Your doctor's view. Ask before you book, not at the pickup. The five questions in the off-road drive section below are the ones to bring.
  2. Your heat tolerance. Heat matters more after 65, and the heat section below sets out what WHO says.
  3. Your tolerance of the ride. A safari starts with a Land Cruiser transfer from your hotel. The standard evening adds a dune-bashing segment; the no-dune-bashing package replaces it with a direct drive to the camp.
  4. Your medicines and conditions. Heart, lung and diabetes conditions, and some medicines, raise heat risk. Tell your doctor and tell the booking desk.

Age is not on that list. Two 70-year-olds can reach opposite answers, so this page asks about the body and not the birthday. The evening itself runs the same for every guest on the package: BBQ buffet dinner, live performances, henna, falcon photography, and an optional camel ride and optional sandboarding.

Why heat deserves more weight for guests over 65

Heat deserves more weight after 65 because the danger rises with age. WHO reports that heat-related deaths among people over 65 increased by about 85% between 2000 to 2004 and 2017 to 2021 (WHO). It also warns that extreme heat can worsen cardiovascular, respiratory and diabetes-related conditions, and can cause acute kidney injury.

WHO Europe names older people, people with chronic illness and people on certain medications among those most at risk, with asthma, diabetes and heart disease as examples (WHO Europe). The NHS adds that people who take several medicines, or medicines that make them more likely to be badly affected by hot weather, are at higher risk (NHS). Your doctor or pharmacist is the person to ask about your own list.

WHO's practical advice fits a safari day. Drink water regularly, about one cup an hour (WHO). Sit in shade, which WHO says can reduce how hot you feel by more than 10 °C. Skip sugary, alcoholic and caffeinated drinks, avoid strenuous activity in the hottest part of the day, and wear light, loose clothing (WHO Europe). Clothing is covered in What to wear on a Dubai desert safari.

Know the warning signs before you travel. WHO Europe lists hot dry skin, delirium and convulsions as signs of heat stroke and says to call a doctor or ambulance immediately. In the UAE the ambulance number is 998 and police is 999 (UAE Government portal).

BookMySafari's morning safari is advertised with cooler dunes and starts from AED 149. It includes dune bashing, so it answers the heat question and leaves the ride question open. Seasons are covered in Best time of year for a Dubai desert safari.

The off-road drive: five questions for your doctor

The off-road drive, called dune bashing, is the segment of a standard evening safari to clear with your doctor, because it is off-road driving with sudden acceleration. BookMySafari's own evening safari page sends guests with severe back or neck issues, and guests with motion sensitivity, to the no-dune-bashing variant. Take these five questions to the appointment.

  1. Does my back or neck tolerate repeated jolting?

Name any disc, spine or neck condition, and any history of fracture, and ask about sustained bumping and sudden acceleration.

  2. Do my hips, knees and bones tolerate a rough ride?

Mention joint replacements, osteoporosis and balance problems, and ask about both the ride and boarding a tall vehicle.

  3. Does my heart or blood pressure tolerate a hot, bumpy evening?

Ask about heat as well as the ride, and about any medicine that changes how you cope with heat.

  4. Is travel safe after my recent surgery?

Give the date and type of surgery, and ask how long you wait before a vehicle ride on rough ground.

  5. Do I get motion sick in cars?

Ask what helps, and read How to prevent motion sickness on a Dubai desert safari.

If the answer to any of them is no, or not sure, choose the evening safari without dune bashing. A direct drive to the camp replaces the off-road segment, and the rest of the evening runs as it does on the standard package. The camel ride and sandboarding are optional on that package, so a guest who prefers not to mount a camel or ride a sand sled skips them. Licensing and driver permits are covered in Are Dubai desert safaris safe in 2026?

Three packages an older traveller can weigh up

Three BookMySafari packages fit an older traveller's questions, at the prices the package pages publish. Each answers a different worry.

  • An evening with no off-road drive, from AED 199. Pickup from your hotel in a Land Cruiser, a direct drive to the camp, BBQ buffet dinner, live performances, henna, falcon photography, and an optional camel ride and optional sandboarding. It settles the ride question. See the evening safari without dune bashing.
  • A morning departure, from AED 149. Advertised with cooler dunes, and it includes dune bashing. It speaks to the heat question. See the morning safari.
  • Your own vehicle, from AED 1,194. The price is per Land Cruiser, for a party of up to six guests, so a family travels together. See a private Land Cruiser.

The package pages publish no senior rate. Send your date, your party and your hotel to the booking desk and ask which route suits, with the answer in writing.

Before you book · ask any operator

Seven questions to send before you pay

Send these seven questions on WhatsApp and ask for every answer in writing. Ask the team to confirm step height, seating and wheelchair access for your date. A number in writing beats a reassurance.

  1. How high is the step into the vehicle, and is there a handle?

Ask for a height in centimetres. Stiff knees or hips decide whether you board unaided, and a number is easier to judge than the word easy.

  2. Is there a chair with back support at dinner?

Seat height and back support decide how an evening of sitting feels. Ask where the seats are and how many are chairs.

  3. How far is the walk from the vehicle to the seating and the toilets?

Ask for the distance in metres and for the surface it crosses.

  4. What shade or cooling is there, and where is it?

WHO puts the effect of shade at more than 10 °C in how hot you feel. Ask where the shade is and whether you can sit in it.

  5. Can I skip the camel ride, sandboarding or any act without a fee?

The no-dune-bashing package page lists the camel ride and sandboarding as optional. Ask the same about every other part of the evening.

  6. Who do I call during the evening, and what is the ambulance plan?

The UAE ambulance number is 998. Ask for the operator's contact on the day and for the hospital nearest the camp.

  7. What happens to my booking if my doctor says no?

Cancellation wording differs between operators. Ask for the terms in writing before you pay and keep the WhatsApp thread.

What to carry and what to tell the booking desk

Carry your medicines and a card that lists your conditions. The list below covers what to bring, and the closing paragraph covers what to tell the booking desk.

  • Medicines. The UAE Government portal says visitors may bring prescribed medicines for personal use in normal quantity, that some medicines need a permit from the Ministry of Health and Prevention, and that narcotic and psychotropic medicines are restricted (UAE Government portal). Check each medicine with the Ministry of Health and Prevention before you fly. It also helps to carry it in its original packaging with the prescription.
  • Water. WHO's guide is about one cup an hour in hot weather (WHO).
  • A card. Write your conditions, your medicines, your doctor's contact and a next of kin on it, in English.
  • Emergency numbers. Ambulance is 998 and police is 999 anywhere in the UAE. In Dubai the DCAS SOS app requests an ambulance (UAE Government portal).

Tell the desk your age, any aid you use, the conditions your doctor has flagged, any worry about heat, your date and your hotel. The desk can then route you to the package that fits.

WhatsApp the booking desk before you pay

Questions older travellers ask

  • Is there a desert safari for elderly guests in Dubai?
BookMySafari does not run a separate safari for elderly guests. Older travellers book the same packages as everyone else, and the one that removes the dune-bashing drive is the evening safari without dune bashing, from AED 199. A direct drive to the camp replaces the off-road segment, and the BBQ buffet dinner, performances, henna and falcon photography run as they do on the standard evening. Your doctor's agreement comes before the booking.
  • Should an older traveller consult a doctor before dune bashing?
Yes. This page cannot give a safe-or-unsafe answer for a person nobody has examined. Dune bashing is off-road driving with sudden acceleration, and BookMySafari's evening safari page sends guests with severe back or neck issues, and guests with motion sensitivity, to the no-dune-bashing variant. Take the five questions in the off-road drive section to your doctor; general safety rules are in Are Dubai desert safaris safe in 2026? If the answer is no, or not sure, choose the evening safari without dune bashing.
  • Is a Dubai desert safari suitable for seniors?
It can be, when your doctor agrees and the heat is tolerable. This page sets no upper age and does not promise there is none. Health, mobility and heat tolerance decide, and your doctor answers the first. Age rules for children are set out in Dubai desert safari with kids. Send your age and any condition to the booking desk on WhatsApp before you pay, and keep the reply in writing.
  • What should seniors ask before booking a desert safari?
Start with the seven questions in the checklist above and send them before you pay. If you use a walking stick or a wheelchair, say so, and ask the team to confirm step height, seating and wheelchair access for your date. Ask for every answer in writing.
  • Can I bring my medicines to Dubai?
The UAE Government portal says visitors may bring prescribed medicines for personal use in normal quantity. Some medicines need a permit from the Ministry of Health and Prevention, and narcotic and psychotropic medicines are restricted, so check each medicine with the Ministry of Health and Prevention before you fly. It also helps to carry them in their original packaging with the prescription.
  • How should an older traveller plan around the heat?
Heat risk rises with age according to WHO, so ask your doctor first. The morning safari is advertised with cooler dunes and starts from AED 149, but it includes dune bashing. The evening safari without dune bashing starts from AED 199 and settles the drive question, not the heat question. The two are set side by side in the morning vs evening desert safari comparison, and seasons are covered in Best time of year for a Dubai desert safari.
  • How much does a desert safari for elderly guests in Dubai cost?
The package pages publish no senior rate. The published prices are from AED 199 for the evening safari without dune bashing, from AED 149 for the morning safari, and from AED 1,194 per vehicle for a private Land Cruiser that carries up to six guests. Ask the booking desk for the price on your date.
