Where a desert safari fits in a 3, 5 or 7 day Dubai itinerary

Which day of your trip suits a desert safari

Day 2 suits a three-day trip, and day 2 or 3 suits four or five days. Day 1 belongs to the journey itself, and a safari on the last full day leaves your own plan with no spare day after it.

Why the day you land rarely works

The plans here keep the safari off the arrival day. That day already holds the flight and check-in, while the evening safari takes most of an afternoon and evening. CDC's criteria for jet lag disorder include insomnia or excessive daytime sleepiness linked to travel across at least two time zones, and impaired daytime function or malaise within 1 to 2 days after travel.

Short regional flights fall outside those criteria: Mumbai sits 1.5 hours ahead of Dubai and Karachi 1 hour, both under the two time zones CDC names. The plans still leave day 1 to the journey after those flights.

Why the last full day leaves no room to spare

A safari on the last full day has nothing in your plan after it, and an evening safari on that day takes the last evening you have before the flight. Move it a day or more earlier and a full day stays behind it.

Keep the next morning light

The morning after the safari wants a slow start. The evening safari runs past sunset, and a standard night at the camp takes that morning itself, so put early starts, such as an Abu Dhabi day trip, on another day.

How the direction you fly changes the plan

Flying east or west changes which safari fits your first days, because the body clock catches up about 1 hour a day eastbound and 1.5 hours a day westbound (CDC Yellow Book 2026). CDC traces the difference to the circadian rhythm, whose natural period runs slightly longer than 24 hours. On a trip of three to five days from Europe or the US East Coast, the clock is still catching up for part of the stay, so choose the safari that suits the clock you still have. The table gives the gap between that clock and Dubai's.

Home time zone (example city) Dubai is You fly Days to adjust at the CDC average Gap closes around
US Eastern (New York) 9 h ahead (8 h from mid-March to early November) East About 9 Day 10
UK (London) 4 h ahead (3 h from late March to late October) East About 4 Day 5
Central Europe (Berlin) 3 h ahead (2 h in European summer time) East About 3 Day 4
India (Mumbai) 1.5 h behind West About 1 Day 2
Pakistan (Karachi) 1 h behind West Under 1 Day 2
Australia East (Sydney) 7 h behind (6 h from early April to early October) West About 5 Day 6

Dubai keeps Gulf Standard Time, UTC+4, all year, with no daylight saving. The gaps are for 15 December 2026. Days to adjust divide the gap by CDC's average rate and round to the nearest day; a result below one day reads "Under 1". The last column counts the arrival day as day 1 and adds the days to adjust. Where Dubai is ahead of you, its late-afternoon winter sunset and early-morning sunrise both fall earlier on your home clock by the gap; where Dubai is behind, they fall later by the gap.

While your body still runs on home time, pick the safari whose highlight lands in your home day rather than your home night: sunset for the evening safari, the softer early-morning light for the morning safari. Either works if neither lands in your home night. This is the BookMySafari editorial desk's reading of the arithmetic; CDC makes no such recommendation.

The last column shows the day that rule stops applying. From London and Sydney, that day comes after the safari day in all three sample plans below, and from New York after a seven-day trip has ended, so the rule still applies on the safari day. From Berlin, the rule covers the three-day and five-day plans and stops applying around day 4, the seven-day plan's safari day.

Flying east from Europe or the US East Coast

The gap points to the evening safari for the first days. Dubai is 4 hours ahead of London in winter and 3 ahead of Berlin, so its late-afternoon sunset falls in your home early afternoon and its early-morning sunrise in the small hours of your home night. New York runs 9 hours behind, which puts the sunset in your home morning and the morning safari across your home late evening and small hours. That gap also means a seven-day trip ends before the CDC average has caught up, so the same rule holds for the whole stay. From west of New York, shift Dubai's sunrise and sunset by your own gap before reading the rule. The morning vs evening desert safari comparison covers everything else that separates the two.

Flying west from India, Pakistan or eastern Australia

A flight from Mumbai or Karachi crosses a gap of only 1 to 1.5 hours, so Dubai's sunrise and sunset both land in your home day and either safari works from day 2. Sydney is the outlier. Dubai sits 7 hours behind Sydney in December, so its early-morning sunrise reaches your home clock in the early afternoon and its late-afternoon sunset around midnight. For the first days after landing from eastern Australia, that gap points to the morning safari.

Staying less than two days

Stays under two days follow a different rule. CDC's advice for trips of less than 2 days is to avoid adapting to the new time zone, so the plans here, made for three days or more, do not fit. For a one-night stay in the city, see the guide to a desert safari on a layover instead.

How much of the day each safari takes

The evening safari takes most of an afternoon and evening, and the morning safari runs on a half-day schedule. The standard overnight takes 18 hours, across an evening and the next morning.

Safari Part of the day it takes What stays open Where it fits in a trip
Evening safari Afternoon and evening, built around sunset The morning After the arrival day, with a full day to spare before you fly; the jet-lag table shows whether it suits your first days
Morning safari A half-day schedule in the early morning, with a breakfast box at the camp The afternoon and evening A day with an evening plan to keep, or your first days if the jet-lag table points to it
Overnight safari 18 hours as standard: an evening, a night at the desert camp and the next morning Nothing until the next morning Mid-trip, on a night with nothing early the next day
Private safari Set by the pickup you arrange, in your own vehicle Depends on that pickup Groups who want a vehicle to themselves

Your morning stays untouched with the evening safari, which fits dune bashing, a BBQ buffet and live shows into the hours either side of sunset.

A morning in the dunes gives you the rest of the day. The morning safari runs on a half-day schedule in the softer early-morning light, with a hot breakfast box at the camp. The morning and evening comparison names a dhow cruise and a Burj Khalifa visit among the ways to use the freed afternoon.

The overnight asks for the most hours: a night at the desert camp brings a BBQ dinner and stargazing in the Dubai desert and runs on into the next morning, so it belongs mid-trip. The evening vs overnight desert safari comparison weighs up the two for anyone still deciding.

Groups can book a private vehicle with a flexible pickup.

The hour-by-hour run of the safari itself is in what to expect on your first desert safari.

Why sunset is the hour to plan around

Sunset is the fixed point of the evening safari: the dune drive leads into sunset, and the BBQ buffet and live shows follow. Each day has only one, so anything else you want to see at sunset takes a different day. The hour itself shifts with the season, earlier in winter and later in summer.

For your own travel month, the best time of year for a desert safari sets out the seasons.

Count your evenings before you book

A three-day trip has three evenings: in the plan below they go to a light arrival dinner, the safari and one open evening. The seven-day plan puts the Burj Khalifa sunset view on day 3 and the safari on day 4, so neither loses its sunset. A dinner cruise and Global Village want an evening too. A morning safari frees an evening when the plans outnumber the evenings.

What to pair with the safari on the same day

An evening safari goes well with a city morning and a quiet early afternoon, while a morning safari leaves room for an afternoon rest and an evening out. A night at the camp leaves no room on either side.

When the dunes take the evening

Spend the morning in the city: Al Fahidi and an abra across Dubai Creek, or a slow walk around Downtown Dubai. In Old Dubai, cross on the abra to Deira, where the Spice Souk sits next to the Gold Souk. Eat lunch early and keep it light; the motion-sickness guide explains why a light meal before the drive out beats an empty stomach. Then rest at the hotel until pickup.

The safari runs past sunset, so check what to wear for an evening in the desert before you leave the hotel. Families with young children can read the age-by-age guide to a desert safari with kids before choosing the day.

When the dunes take the morning

The afternoon goes back to you, for the pool or the Dubai Mall, and the evening stays open for a plan such as Global Village. The park runs late into the night, in season from October, and posts the current season's dates and hours on its own plan-your-visit page. Check Tuesdays first. Except on public holidays, the park reserves them for families, couples and ladies, so a group outside those categories picks another evening.

When you sleep at the camp

Plan nothing for the afternoon or evening of the day you go, and nothing early the next morning. A standard overnight lasts into that morning, so plan the day after as a slow one.

1 hour a day

How fast the body clock catches up after flying east

Westbound arrivals average 1.5 hours a day (CDC Yellow Book 2026).

Where Abu Dhabi and Fridays fit

Give Abu Dhabi a day of its own. The five-day and seven-day plans put it two days after the safari, with a late start in between. Fridays add one constraint: the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque closes to visitors from 11:30 AM to 2:30 PM.

For anyone choosing which emirate's desert to ride, the guide to the dunes on the Abu Dhabi side sets them against Dubai's.

Friday hours at the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque

On Fridays the mosque's visitor timetable splits in two: 9 AM to 11:30 AM with last entry at 11 AM, then 2:30 PM to 8:30 PM with last entry at 8 PM. That leaves two hours to get in before the midday closure and five and a half after it, so the afternoon is the easier fit for a Friday visit. Saturday to Thursday, it runs from 9 AM to 8:30 PM, with last entry at 8 PM.

Visitors pre-book an online access pass through the mosque's visitor page. The dress code asks for long, loose-fitting, ankle-length clothes for women and men, and women wear a headscarf.

Sample plans for three, five and seven days

Each plan puts the safari after the arrival day and keeps the day after it light. One evening stays open for another sunset plan. The plans use the evening safari; where the jet-lag table points your first days to the morning safari, swap it in on the same day.

Any itinerary with a desert safari in it works better with some empty time after the safari than with one more sight squeezed in.

Three days

Three days leave one evening for the dunes and one for everything else at sunset.

Day Morning Afternoon Evening
1 Arrival Check-in and rest Light dinner in Downtown Dubai
2 Slow start by the pool Early light lunch, rest Evening safari
3 Late start Al Fahidi and an abra across Dubai Creek Open evening: Global Village in season, or a dinner cruise

From eastern Australia, take the morning safari on day 2 instead, with the pool and rest after it.

Five days

A 5-day Dubai itinerary has room for Abu Dhabi as well, provided the day after the safari stays light. Abu Dhabi takes day 5.

Day Morning Afternoon Evening
1 Arrival Check-in and rest Light dinner near the hotel
2 Al Fahidi and Dubai Creek Rest Downtown Dubai and the Burj Khalifa
3 A short city morning at the Dubai Mall Early light lunch, rest Evening safari
4 Late start Beach or Dubai Marina Open evening
5 Abu Dhabi day trip; on a Friday, reach the Grand Mosque by 11 AM or after 2:30 PM Abu Dhabi Back in Dubai, quiet evening

Landing from Sydney, take the morning safari on day 3 instead and save the Dubai Mall for that afternoon. You could swap the evening safari for a night at the camp on night 3, since day 4 already starts late.

Seven days

Seven days let the safari sit mid-trip with room on both sides.

Day Morning Afternoon Evening
1 Arrival Check-in and rest Light dinner near the hotel
2 Al Fahidi and Dubai Creek Rest Dinner by the creek
3 Downtown Dubai Rest A sunset view from the Burj Khalifa
4 Slow start Early light lunch, rest Evening safari
5 Late start Beach and Dubai Marina Open evening: Global Village in season
6 Abu Dhabi day trip Abu Dhabi Back in Dubai
7 Spare day Palm Jumeirah or the pool Packing and an early night before the flight

From New York, day 4 sits well short of the 9 days the CDC average needs, so the evening safari still fits. After a flight from eastern Australia, take the morning safari on day 4 instead, with the rest after it. You could also swap the evening safari for a night at the camp mid-trip, with a slow day after it.

When Ramadan or the season changes the plan

In Ramadan, iftar, the sunset meal that breaks the fast, shapes the evening. The Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque changes its hours and publishes a separate Ramadan timetable: visits end at 6 PM, and a late session from 9:30 PM runs in the first 20 days only. Friday daytime visits run from 2:30 PM to 6 PM. Check the mosque's own visiting-hours page before you fix an Abu Dhabi day. For the safari side, read what changes during Ramadan.

BookMySafari's seasonal advice is evening from November to March, morning from May to September, and the best-time guide covers it month by month. The jet-lag table reads mid-December, inside the evening season. On a trip between November and March, follow the table for the first days and the seasonal advice once your clock has caught up.

Questions about planning a Dubai itinerary with a desert safari

  • Which day of a Dubai trip is best for a desert safari?
Day 2 suits a three-day trip, day 2 or 3 a trip of four or five days, and day 4 a trip of seven, with the next morning kept light. Day 1 goes on the flight and check-in, and the last full day leaves no spare day after the safari. Then use the jet-lag table: the evening safari for the first days after a flight from Europe or the US East Coast, the morning safari from eastern Australia, and either from India or Pakistan. From another city, shift Dubai's sunrise and sunset by your own gap.
  • Is it a bad idea to do a desert safari on the day I land?
Yes, after a long-haul flight. The BookMySafari editorial desk keeps the safari off the arrival day, because the evening safari takes most of an afternoon and evening. CDC's criteria for jet lag disorder include insomnia or excessive daytime sleepiness linked to travel across at least two time zones, and impaired daytime function or malaise within 1 to 2 days after travel. From India or Pakistan the gap is 1 to 1.5 hours, under the two time zones in those criteria, so they do not apply; the plans still leave day 1 to the journey.
  • How long does a desert safari take out of my day?
How long a desert safari lasts depends on which one you book: the standard overnight runs 18 hours, from an evening through a night at the desert camp to the next morning. The evening safari takes most of an afternoon and evening and keeps your morning; the morning safari runs on a half-day schedule and keeps your afternoon and evening. The what-to-expect guide walks through the hour-by-hour run of the evening safari.
  • How do I plan a Dubai day around the desert?
Start from the time of day the safari takes. With the evening safari, spend the morning in the city, eat a light early lunch and rest before the dunes, and keep every other sunset plan, such as the Burj Khalifa view, for another day. With the morning safari, the dunes come first, the afternoon goes to rest or the pool, and the evening stays open for Global Village in season. A standard night at the camp takes the rest of the day and the next morning, so plan nothing around it.
  • Can I do Abu Dhabi and a desert safari on the same day?
Not on the same day in the plans here. The evening safari takes the afternoon and runs past sunset, so Abu Dhabi gets a day of its own, two days after the safari. Fridays need extra care at the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque, whose visitor timetable stops morning entry at 11 AM and reopens to visitors at 2:30 PM. Pre-book the online access pass on the mosque's own visitor page.
  • What does a 3-day Dubai itinerary with a desert safari look like?
Day 1 is for arriving, checking in and a light dinner in Downtown Dubai. Day 2 starts slowly and ends with the evening safari. Day 3 begins late, with Al Fahidi and an abra across Dubai Creek in the afternoon, and keeps the evening open for Global Village in season or a dinner cruise. Flying in from eastern Australia, take the morning safari on day 2 instead, with the pool and rest after it.
  • Should I sleep at the desert camp the night before my flight?
Pick a night with nothing early the next day. A standard night at the camp lasts 18 hours and takes the next morning as well as the evening. In the five-day plan it can replace the evening safari on night 3, since day 4 already starts late. In the seven-day plan it fits mid-trip, with a slow day after it. The evening vs overnight comparison helps if you are still deciding.
  • Does Ramadan change where the safari fits in my plan?
Yes, in two places: the evening and the Abu Dhabi day. Iftar, the sunset meal that breaks the fast, shapes a Ramadan evening, and the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque switches to a separate timetable. Daytime visits close at 6 PM, and a late session from 9:30 PM to 1 AM runs in the first 20 days only. Friday daytime visits run from 2:30 PM to 6 PM. Check the mosque's timetable before fixing the Abu Dhabi day; the Ramadan page covers what changes on the safari itself.
